School Signage: Campus Identification, Wayfinding and Safety Signs
School signage has to satisfy an unusual mix of demands: identify the campus to the community, direct visitors to a single secure entry point, keep buses, parent drop-off and staff parking from colliding, meet ADA requirements room by room, and survive a decade of weather and daily use. Zealot Signs designs, permits, fabricates and installs school and campus signage across Ohio from our shop in Powell.
We work with districts, private and parochial schools, charter operators and higher-education campuses, and we handle the whole package — exterior identification, message centers, vehicular and pedestrian wayfinding, interior room and ADA signage, and athletic facility signage.

How Zealot Signs delivers this work
Every step below happens inside Zealot Signs — no brokered design, no subcontracted fabrication, no day-rate install crew.
Exterior campus identification
- Entrance monument at the main drive with the school name, district identification and often a changeable or electronic message area.
- LED message center for events, closures, game results and community messaging, with automatic dimming and a dwell time that satisfies local code.
- Building identification lettering, which is what a visitor navigating by phone actually looks for.
- Secondary entrance and building-number identification so emergency responders can locate a specific building without guessing.
- Athletic signage — scoreboard identification, field and facility naming, donor recognition and spectator wayfinding.
Wayfinding designed around a single secure entry
Modern school security assumes every visitor enters through one controlled door. Signage is what makes that assumption true. That means unambiguous vehicular directional signage from the street to visitor parking, clear separation of bus loop, parent drop-off and staff lots, and pedestrian signage from visitor parking to the main office door with no plausible alternative reading.
The failure mode is well known: a visitor parks in the wrong lot, walks to the nearest door, finds it locked, and wanders the building perimeter. We map the actual routes on the site plan, place signs at each decision point rather than only at the entrance, and use consistent color and arrow logic so a first-time visitor never has to interpret.
Interior: room identification, ADA and life safety
Interior school signage is a large schedule of small signs, and it is where compliance lives. Permanent rooms, restrooms, stairs and exits require tactile raised characters and Grade 2 Braille with non-glare finishes, adequate contrast, and compliant mounting height and location on the latch side of the door. Add classroom numbering, staff and administrative identification, occupancy and evacuation signage, and area-of-refuge identification.
We produce the schedule from the floor plans, build to current ADA standards, and coordinate installation around your inspection date or summer break rather than during instructional hours.
Public-sector realities: bids, budgets and summer windows
School work runs on a different calendar and a different procurement process than commercial work. We provide quotes in the detail and format bid documents require, itemized by sign type and count so a board or business office can evaluate them, and we can hold pricing across a budget cycle where that is needed.
Installation almost always has to happen in a summer or break window. Because fabrication is in our own Powell shop and installation is by our own Ohio-licensed crews, we can commit to a break window and hit it — there is no subcontracted crew whose schedule we do not control.
School & campus signage: common questions
What does school signage cost?
It is quoted as a schedule rather than a single number. At Zealot Signs, entrance monument signs start around $5,000, architectural wayfinding programs around $3,500, and ADA and room identification signs around $150 each and are priced as a package by count. LED message centers are quoted by display size and pixel pitch. We itemize by sign type and quantity so a district business office can evaluate the numbers line by line.
Can you install school signage over summer break?
Yes, and that is when most of our school work happens. Because we fabricate in our own shop in Powell and install with our own Ohio-licensed crews, we can commit to a summer or break window and hold it. We just need the order early enough that fabrication — roughly three to four weeks after drawing approval, longer for large schedules — finishes before the window opens.
Does school signage have to be ADA compliant?
Yes. Permanent room identification — classrooms, restrooms, stairs, exits and rooms whose function will not change — needs tactile raised characters, Grade 2 Braille, non-glare finishes with adequate contrast, and compliant mounting height and location on the latch side of the door. We build the schedule to current standards from your floor plans and coordinate around inspections.
Are there rules about LED message centers at schools?
Yes, and they are local. Many Ohio jurisdictions regulate electronic signs on brightness, require automatic dimming at night, set a minimum dwell time between messages, and limit animation or scrolling — often more strictly where the parcel abuts residential property, which many schools do. We check your specific address before designing so the sign we quote is one that can be permitted.
Do you handle athletic facility and donor recognition signage?
Yes — scoreboard identification, field and facility naming, sponsor and donor recognition panels, spectator wayfinding, and gate and ticketing signage. Donor recognition in particular benefits from a modular design so names can be added in future campaigns without rebuilding the display.
