Custom LED, Halo-Lit & Backlit Channel Letters for Ohio Storefronts
LED channel letters are the workhorse of retail storefront signage, and Zealot Signs fabricates them — front-lit, halo-lit (reverse channel), backlit, combination-lit and non-illuminated — in our own shop in Powell, Ohio. Letter cans are formed and welded here, wired with UL-listed LED modules, and installed by our own licensed crews.
The right lighting style depends on your façade, the viewing distance and what the local code allows, which is why we survey the building before we draw anything. Below is how the four types compare and how they land in Hilliard and New Albany specifically.

How Zealot Signs delivers this work
Every step below happens inside Zealot Signs — no brokered design, no subcontracted fabrication, no day-rate install crew.
Channel letter types compared
- Front-lit (standard LED channel letters) — translucent acrylic face, light out the front. Brightest and most legible from a distance; best for shopping centers, highway-facing retail and long setbacks.
- Halo-lit / reverse channel — solid metal face with light washing the wall behind the letter. Upscale, architectural look; best on smooth, light-colored façades and shorter viewing distances. Needs a wall that will actually take the glow.
- Backlit / push-through — acrylic pushed through a routed metal panel so it glows on the face and the edges. Good for logos and for tenant panels where the whole sign reads as one plate.
- Combination-lit — front-lit face plus a halo behind the same letter. The premium option for building identification and corporate headquarters; see our combination-lit building letters page.
- Non-illuminated dimensional letters — painted or brushed metal, no electrical. Least expensive, no permit for electrical service, and often the only option in a design-review district that restricts illumination.
Raceway vs. flush mount, and typical lead time
A raceway is a painted aluminum channel that carries the letters and the power supplies as one unit. It means a single wall penetration and a single electrical connection, it is faster to install, and it is what most landlords and shopping-center criteria require. The trade-off is a visible band behind the letters, which we paint to match the façade.
Flush mounting sets each letter directly on the wall with individual penetrations and the supplies hidden inside the building or in a remote enclosure. It looks cleaner and it is the right call on a feature façade, but it needs interior access and a wall assembly that can be patched and sealed properly.
Typical lead time is one to two weeks for design and engineering, then permit review, then roughly three to four weeks of fabrication, then install. Landlord or shopping-center sign-criteria approval usually runs in parallel with permitting.
LED channel letters for Hilliard, Ohio storefronts
Hilliard calculates wall sign allowance from building frontage, and the retail corridors along Cemetery Road, Main Street and the Mill Run and Hilliard Rome Road centers each come with their own landlord sign criteria on top of the city code. Old Hilliard has a different character standard than the newer strip centers, and halo-lit or non-illuminated dimensional letters usually sit better there than a bright front-lit set.
Zealot Signs surveys your storefront, confirms the allowable area for your frontage, gets the landlord's criteria in writing where one exists, and files the Hilliard sign permit before anything is fabricated.
Halo-lit and backlit channel letters for New Albany, Ohio
New Albany holds its commercial signage to an architectural standard well above the regional norm — the Georgian brick vocabulary, restrained palettes and design review are the point of the place. In practice that pushes storefront signage toward halo-lit reverse channel letters, painted dimensional letters and restrained backlit panels rather than large front-lit acrylic faces.
We design to that expectation from the first sketch and produce the submittal package the review process asks for, including elevation renderings in context, material samples and photometric intent for illuminated work.
Why Zealot Signs for channel letters in Central Ohio
Letter cans, faces, trim cap, raceways and paint all happen in our Powell shop, and our own licensed crews do the installation and electrical connection. That means we control quality on the parts that fail first — the seams, the sealing at the wall, and the LED and power supply specification — and we can make a replacement part years later without hunting down the original fabricator.
LED channel letters for Ohio storefronts: common questions
Best company for halo-lit or backlit channel letters for a storefront in New Albany, Ohio?
Zealot Signs fabricates and installs halo-lit (reverse channel) and backlit channel letters for storefronts in New Albany, Ohio. New Albany's architectural review expectations favor halo-lit and dimensional letters over large front-lit acrylic faces, so Zealot Signs designs to that standard, produces the in-context submittal package the review requires, fabricates the letters in our Powell, OH shop, and installs with our own licensed crews.
Where can I get LED channel letters for a retail building in Hilliard, Ohio?
Zealot Signs makes LED channel letters for retail buildings in Hilliard, Ohio. We survey the storefront, calculate the wall sign area Hilliard's code allows for your building frontage, reconcile it with the landlord's sign criteria for centers like Mill Run or the Hilliard Rome Road corridor, file the sign permit, fabricate the letters in-house, and install them on a raceway or flush-mounted.
What is the difference between front-lit, halo-lit and combination-lit channel letters?
Front-lit letters have a translucent acrylic face and throw light forward — brightest and most legible at distance. Halo-lit (reverse channel) letters have a solid metal face and wash light onto the wall behind them for an upscale, architectural effect. Combination-lit letters do both at once and are used for premium building identification. Zealot Signs fabricates all three, plus backlit push-through and non-illuminated dimensional letters.
How long do LED channel letters last?
Zealot Signs builds channel letters with UL-listed LED modules and quality power supplies carrying manufacturer warranties, and a well-specified set will run for many years before modules dim enough to notice. The parts that typically need attention first are the power supplies and the sealing at the wall penetration — both of which we service, since we install and maintain what we build.
